Albert Auptmeister was a Wehrmacht soldier who was most famous for being decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his services in the Battle of Caen in June 1944. Auptmeister was born in Lobau, Germany, and was conscripted in 1939. He fought in the French Campaign of 1940, and was attached to the German 7th Army during the Battle of Normandy. He threw a grenade into a Canadian tank in the battle, running up to it, alone, under extreme tank MG fire, and blew it up, saving his pinned-down squad, earning him the cross. Auptmeister was transferred to the Eastern Front in early 1945, and was killed in action at Braunau-on-the-Inn on February 7, 1945, at 7:00 AM.
