Flag of the Wehrmacht

The 1st Lithuanian Brigade, commonly known as the Iron Wolves, was a unit in the Wehrmacht who served on the Western Front of World War II. They were founded on December 25, 1941, out of 5,500 Lithuanian volunteers; Lithuania never had a national legion that was raised.

History Edit

The 1st Lithuanian Brigade was founded by the Wehrmacht OKW, who wanted to put Lithuanian volunteers to good use. It reached brigade strength by early 1942, and they fought on the Eastern Front as a part of the 1st Lithuanian Division, and in 1945, after combat in Poland, it was dispatched to Central Germany, where it fought against Britain and France with limited victories. The Brigade surrendered on May 2, 1945, to Sir Bernard Montgomery, at Frankfurt am Oder.
